Built for city houses

Built for the way St. Louis City homes are built

Most of the city's houses went up between 1890 and 1950, and they do not behave like a county subdivision. Gingerbread bungalows and shotgun houses carry low-slope rear roofs that shed water slowly. Four-family flats and corner storefronts have flat roofs that need a membrane, not shingles. Older brick two-stories still carry clay tile or slate, with box gutters and parapet walls that have to be flashed correctly.

We quote each of those roofs on its own terms: architectural shingles from Owens Corning, GAF or CertainTeed on the pitched sections, a heat-welded TPO membrane on the flat sections, and metal flashing where the two meet. Brick homes get siding only where it belongs - dormers, rear additions, gable ends and porches - and we tie James Hardie fiber cement siding into the masonry so it stays dry.

Storm damage

After the May 16, 2025 tornado, and every hail season since

The EF3 tornado on May 16, 2025 cut a path up to a mile wide across north St. Louis, from Clayton through Fountain Park, The Ville and Penrose, and damaged thousands of roofs. Hail has followed every spring; the largest 2026 report near the city was 1.5 inches. Most of that damage becomes an insurance claim, and the claim goes smoother when the contractor documents it properly.

In 2025 we handled storm claims for homeowners on Milentz Avenue and Lisette Avenue in St. Louis Hills, and repaired flat roofs on Lindell Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue. We meet the adjuster on site, photograph every slope, and write the scope in the carrier's format so nothing gets left off.

Permits and historic districts

What the City requires before the first shingle comes off

The City of St. Louis requires a building permit for a complete new roof, for any re-roof that is not like-for-like material, and whenever more than 25 percent of the roof sheathing is replaced. A straight shingle-for-shingle repair usually does not need one.

If your house sits in a City Historic District such as Soulard, Lafayette Square, Benton Park or the Central West End, exterior work also needs Cultural Resources Office approval before it starts, even for gutters. We flag both on the estimate, build the review time into the schedule, and match materials to what the district allows.

FAQ

Questions St. Louis City homeowners ask us

Short answers to the questions we hear most inside the city. Call (314) 952-4158 if yours is not here.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in St. Louis City?

Yes for a complete new roof, a change of roofing material, or any job that replaces more than 25 percent of the sheathing. A like-for-like shingle repair usually does not. Homes in a City Historic District also need Cultural Resources Office approval. We tell you which applies before work starts.

What do you put on a flat roof?

Heat-welded TPO membrane over insulation board is our standard for four-families, rear additions and garages. Modified bitumen is an option for small areas and tie-ins. Both come with manufacturer warranties, and tapered insulation can be added to stop ponding.

Can you put siding on a brick house?

Brick stays brick. We side the frame parts: dormers, gable ends, rear additions, porches and bump-outs, usually in James Hardie fiber cement with matching trim, flashed into the masonry so water cannot get behind it.

How does an insurance claim work after hail or wind damage?

Call us first for an inspection and photos. If there is real damage, you file the claim, we meet the adjuster on site, and we write the scope in the carrier's format. You pay your deductible and the carrier pays the approved balance. We do not recommend filing until we have looked at the roof.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most city shingle roofs are finished in one to two days. Flat roofs, and roofs where slate or tile has to come off first, take longer. The estimate gives you a day count and the crew cleans the lot and alley each day.

Do you work on multi-family and small commercial buildings in the city?

Yes. We have completed roof and flat roof projects on four-families, apartment buildings and corner commercial buildings in the Central West End, DeBaliviere Place and south city, including multi-building portfolios. See commercial roofing in St. Louis.
